This was episode 6 of the latest episode in doctor who, based in 1813, where it is similar to another classic show broadcasted on BBC, Bridgerton. This post contains SPOILERS so to view the post click the SHOW link below or click: HERE to watch the episode on BBC iPlayer.
[spoiler]We start off the episode with our favourite open where we have a cold open, followed by the title scene, the classic way of introducing doctor who where we get introduced straight away to the villain of the episode The Chuldur who love to cosplay where one of the dukes is murdered.
This is how you start off an episode of doctor who with a fantastic hook showing off The Chuldur’s capabilities, making you feel intrigued to find out how the doctor and ruby will be able to solve this situation.
The doctor then meets the bounty hunter: Rogue – who first of all thinks that The Doctor is a shape shifter and is cosplaying however the doctor is able to use his sonic screw driver. Finally we have a reason why the screwdriver is such a unique shape compared to previous ones as he is able to use tools such as a magnifying glass to spot that the “Rogue” was named from a game from Dungeons and Dragons.
This scene turns into a little argument between The Doctor and Rogue while his teleportation pod is being charged up, this is where the doctor is able to use the sonic screwdriver to play the song: “Can’t get you out of my head” by Kylie Minogue. Before the doctor is finally able to use his psychic paper to confince rogue that he is a timelord where 18 doctor who faces are shown, this includes The War Doctor, and the Fugitive Doctor. This is how music should be brought into a doctor who episode and really made me enjoy the scene, while being worried about the doctors fate, and just enjoying the way the doctor was playing and messing with Rogue. Once the doctors faces came up I was pleased to see the flash back’s to previous re-incarnations even the doctors who we would not expect.
We then have the doctor take rogue to the timelord where he sings the “come with me, and you’ll see a world of pure imagination” from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. – This is exactly what I have been waiting for a tardis scene which when this happened I instantly thought of: THIS IS DOCTOR WHO.
We then head back into the main ball room where the doctor meets ruby again, and her new “friend” and introduces each other as Ruby, 2024 and Emily 1813 and tells ruby that the villain is a shape shifting Chuldur which Ruby and Emily are already aware. The doctor then realises that the reason why this ball was chosen was because of the music and the drama
I am currently really enjoying this episode more than I have done for the past 5 episodes leading up to it, and felt this episode should have been moved to an earlier episode slot and not the 6th episode in the season.
The doctor then suggest to Rogue that they need to-do something scandals and create drama in the room. This happens to be a DANCE where both The Doctor and Rogue do an intermate dance, This ends with the doctor finally making a scene raising his voice in the centre of the room when everyone is looking, which then causes Rogue to ask if the doctor would like to marry him?
This already is some fantastic piece of writing, especially in 1813 where it was not common for 2 men to be dancing together let alone ask each other to marry them which of course creates the drama that The Doctor and Rogue were wanting to lure the Chuldur out from the ball room.
We then get introduced the Chuldur family outside on the lawn where they shape shift into human bird like characters, this then turns into a chase around the grounds of the ball room to where they manage to escape in a vehicle on the ceiling inside and overhear the Chuldur’s plan to move forward to the finale of the cosplay the “wedding”.
We then see that Ruby is to be married to one of the Chuldur in the wedding which means she has been killed. This causes the doctor to run out the room and get really emotional to have a flash back to where ruby’s adoptive mum tells the doctor to keep her safe and he has been unable to keep her safe. Once the doctor is able to compose himself he is them able to walk back into the wedding to say “I Object to this wedding”, as he walks down the aisle before placing the Chuldur into a tri trap.
This is where Ruby then says.. it’s me.. I am ruby Sunday, and explains that she used her psychic earrings to battle one of the Chuldur to then make a fake sent for the wedding, The doctor is then given a choice that he struggles to make where he has to either kill ruby, or kill the entire world. This is where I loved the emotions that were shown between the doctor and ruby showing the companionship between each other.
We then get Rogue kiss the doctor who is trying to find the answer before he takes the remote to send the transport off, he is able to move Ruby away and sacrifice himself to save ruby. Saying “find me” to the doctor.
Not only did we get to enjoy a new character and also allow the doctor to finally have a life long companion as well as his earth, human companions but also someone who he shares a deep relationship with!
We end off the episode with Ruby and The doctor talking about Rogue on the steps outside the ball room and we get to see the emotional side of the doctor before he “snaps out and moves on”, however Ruby does not allow this to happen and allows the doctor to accept the feeling of loss of his new friend.
Overall this episode of doctor who was amazing, well written, and made me finally believe in doctor who and I can’t wait to see the next episode of doctor who during the trailer we saw glimpses of why this face/character has been in every episode, along with UNIT.
